1970s / BEFORE THE FIRST NOTE

ROCK & ROLL

Before I played a note, there was radio. And growing up in Sacramento, we had KZAP, the album rock station that played what it wanted. It phased through late-seventies rock and roll, into new wave, then into the rock records that ran the eighties. It was my lifeblood. Even as a kid, I felt there was something inside that music that would come looking for me one day. It was Analog Innocence.

1990 / THE FIRST SIGNAL

Steve Howe

The summons came on New Year’s Eve, 1990, at a family friend’s party. I’d just gotten a guitar for Christmas and brought it along, though I couldn’t play a single note. Steve Howe was there, and I watched him really play. He’d studied with Richard McGrath of True West, a Davis guitar band tied to California’s Paisley Underground. For about a year, Steve handed some of that language down to me: the blues, the great players, and the records that held the whole history together. I practiced like nothing else existed, sometimes thirteen or fourteen hours a day. Before there was a road, there was just the need to play.

Steve did more than teach me the instrument. He showed me into rock and roll. I turned into a fierce collector of albums and recordings, chasing down bands I’d known only as names on the radio. I spent hours in record stores digging through the alphabet, then hurried home to hear what I’d found. Wet Willie. Jean-Luc Ponty. Dobie Gray. The Sons of the Pioneers. My musician’s ears were coming in. I was learning how songs get written and how records get made. Before long, I wanted to tape everything myself: rehearsals, songs, half-ideas. Listening back showed me what worked, what didn’t, and why. Playing, writing, recording, listening: it all became one job. That’s still how I work.

I’m glad to be part of that lineage: Richard McGrath to Steve Howe, Steve to me, each guitar player passing the language forward.

1994—1997 / FIRST OUTWARD TRANSMISSION

Sweet Vine

Hans Eberbach and I found each other in 1991, not long after I started playing guitar. I was still new to the instrument but already moving fast toward a serious life in music. Axis Blue, our first Sacramento band, was where we learned to write and record together. We cut a demo, the band came apart, and I went looking for other musicians through a classified ad.

That’s how I found Steve King. He’d just come out of a band with a record deal at A&M. He loved ’70s rock and hit the drums hard. When he asked if I knew a singer, I told him I did. I played him the Axis Blue demo. He heard Hans’s voice and lost it. He couldn’t believe I knew that guy.

Steve had the guitarist and singer he’d been looking for. I’d found someone whose ambition matched mine. I was young enough to know almost nothing, except that I wanted to make music. I didn't even know what a stage looked like yet. Steve knew Steve Clausman, a professional race driver and manager whose roster included Tesla and other Northern California bands. Clausie moved fast. He brought us into the Los Angeles music business and helped us land a publishing deal with Warner Chappell.

What started with three writers in a garage became the Core Four: Hans, Steve King, Jason Fluhrer, and me. That was Sweet Vine until Gary Frank Skaggs came in later. Joe Johnston became the band’s recordist and caught the music as it took shape. A Columbia deal followed, and then years measured in highways, radio reports, strange stages, and the records we made.

We made the album in 1995 at Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, where Michael Barbiero produced, engineered, and mixed it. Michael was more than a first-rate engineer and producer. I was young. He was older. He helped me, and he became a mentor. I’m grateful for the dinners and the drives. He’d always say, “Look, we’re not sending anyone to the moon here. We’re just making records.”

The finished album then sat on a shelf for more than a year. We couldn’t tour behind it, and we couldn’t push into anything new. Columbia finally released the record in early 1997.

The album opened, fittingly, with “Mountainside,” a song built around the first guitar riff I’d ever written. I found it on an old cassette of myself practicing and thought, this sounds fun! That little fragment became the band’s lead radio single: the No. 1 most-added rock record in Radio & Records, and No. 23 nationally on Rock Airplay Monitor’s Heritage Rock chart. A riff I’d caught on a practice cassette was on the radio now. The kid who’d grown up listening was finally coming back through the speakers.

But even as “Mountainside” found its audience, the famous “creative differences” were pulling me away from the thing that held us together: writing songs. The same set night after night had worn us down. I wanted room to grow and write again. In the summer of ’97, I left Sweet Vine and went home to Sacramento.

Back home, I turned toward my own songwriting, co-writes, recording, and production. At Little Blue Studios, I recorded local bands and songwriters on my reel-to-reel machine, including Forever Goldrush’s first demo. I also did studio work for Empty Pages, Tim Bluhm of The Mother Hips, and Derek White. Over the next couple of years, I kept recording my own music and picked up technical work as the early dot-com boom got going. That side of the story continues in HEAD.

Looking Star

In late 2002, Looking Star put me back with Hans Eberbach and Steve King from Sweet Vine. Isaac Parsons of the Mother Hips and Scott Reams of Zoppi joined us. Jeremy Plog came in as the lineup shifted.

We were always writing and recording, same as before. The lineup and the room had changed. The impulse hadn’t: get together, chase the song, put it on tape, listen back until it’s done.

Our manager, Marty DeAnda, also managed a young Sacramento songwriter named Jackie Greene. Looking Star opened for Jackie at Slim’s in San Francisco. That room turned into the next twenty years.

NOVEMBER 2005—PRESENT / OPEN CHANNEL / THE LONG ROAD

Jackie Greene

I joined Jackie’s band on guitar and background vocals in late 2005, after his new deal with Verve Forecast opened the road. What followed became the longest public stretch of my musical life, and it’s still going. For more than twenty years, that’s meant touring overseas, recording, radio studios, television soundstages, festivals, theaters, and learning how to carry a song night after night.

From there, the role kept growing: production, recording, rehearsals, arrangements, travel days, live releases, and radio sessions. Some nights were stage lights. Some were festival fields. Some were small rooms where the only job was to make the song work.

It carried me through the American Myth campaign, the making and touring of Giving Up the Ghost, later records, and years of rooms that kept getting bigger. I was there as a sideman, collaborator, technician, friend, and witness to a road that kept asking all of us to grow.

The passes stopped being souvenirs and became mile markers.

The Wooden Revolt

Bruce Spencer and I started The Wooden Revolt mostly as a recording project, off to the side of the Jackie Greene band. We took the chemistry we’d built on the road and pushed it somewhere new with guitar, drums, and both our voices.

From 2012 through 2018, Bruce and I put out singles instead of an album. We co-produced them: I played guitar and sang; Bruce did the same from the drums. Mark Harmon of The 77’s anchored the early sessions, and Bruce plays in The 77’s too. Gabe Nelson later brought his own bass voice into the project.

The experiments started earlier. In 2008, Bruce engineered what became the Dodge Caravan guitar sound: amplifier in the back, microphones wherever they worked.

Nathan Dale

In 2011, I put out Major Key’s Parade, my first album under my own name. A concept record about a life running from birth to death, told through a connected cast of songs and hand-drawn characters. It cut closer than the Wooden Revolt singles: I made it after a loss. I wrote, arranged, produced, and engineered it. Bruce Spencer and Mark Harmon came over from the Wooden Revolt to play the rhythm section. Michael Beyer (Diana Ross, Rickie Lee Jones) mixed it.

Soon after, I pulled together a band from friends whose instincts I already trusted: Jeremy Plog on bass, Steve King on drums, Scott Reams moving between keys and saxophone. I sang and played guitar. We took the record out live and let the songs turn into a band’s music. The name on the bill was mine; the sound was everyone’s.

Major Key’s Parade opened the solo work. The new songs and records taking shape now continue under Nathan Dale.

Present Day

The work is still happening. I’m still singing and playing with Jackie Greene, the Golden Cadillacs, and other bands around Northern California. Different names, different nights, but always the same reason: make the song feel alive and listen to the people beside me.

Offstage, I’m producing and engineering records: my own work and albums by artists who trust me with their songs. That work still gives me the same charge I got from that first cassette: capturing the take that actually happened in the room.

I’m still working, still learning, still paying dues. It’s the life.

THANK
YOU

I haven’t made my life in music alone.

Some people crossed the same stages for a night, some opened doors, and some carried the work in ways only friends do. I thank the people who gave their time, rooms, rides, records, introductions, chords, and even their money to help the music keep moving.

FOR THE ROAD, THE TRUST, AND THE YEARS I DIDN'T SEE COMING. WITH GRATITUDE.

After Sweet Vine and Looking Star, I didn’t know there was this much music left in me. Jackie’s trust opened all of it. The miles, rooms, records, and friendships that followed changed the shape of my life. I’m grateful to him for making room for me in it.
